Books are not essential on a visit to the Battlefields, a Michelin map of the area will show every cemetery in the region and most of the memorials. Where the books and guides come into their own is with the detail and background information they give.

Two books I have found to be excellent for preparing a visit are from Major and Mrs. Holt, the Battlefield Guides to the Somme and Ypres ( two books ).

The books are identical in layout, and have suggestions for route tours that you might like to try. Each tour takes you progressively from the ordinary track taken by visitors, and leads you to discover the many 'forgotten' memorials and battle areas. If you don't have time or choose not to follow the tours, it is still and excellent reference for finding the places you want to see.

The books are best read before a visit, when you can plan your itinary around the time you have available in each area. They both also contain detailed maps of the repective areas which indicate the memorials and points of interest ( best read with a michelin map for double accuracy when driving around !).
